Patrick Eddington, known as "Pat the Cat," was a Utah-based artist, teacher & cat lover. He engaged in extensive correspondence throughout his life with a staggering number of authors & visual artists. Eddington’s charm & his persuasive letters convinced many to contribute to the Cat Project, an ambitious undertaking which Eddington described as follows in a letter dated 2004: "This project is a labor of love. It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works. I have over 240 works so far including work by: Günter Grass, William Wegman, Kiki Smith, Sandy Skoglund, Peter Milton, Robert Crumb, Keith Carter, Joel Peter Witkin, Jerome Witkin, Alison Saar, William Wiley, Ralph Steadman, Peter Beard, Gladys Nilsson, José Bedia, Haruki Murakami, David Lynch, Clive Barker, Mark Ryden, Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood, Doris Lessing, Robert Williams, Al Hirschfeld, Leo and Diane Dillon, Lynda Barry, Roddy Doyle, Francisco Toledo, Flor Garduno, etc." Eddington’s vision was sadly never realized, but his tenacity & appeal resulted in the creation of a wealth of fascinating letters and original art from creative luminaries around the world. A portion of the proceeds from this auction will benefit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Patrick J. Eddington of Salt Lake City, UT had a passion for Southwestern, outsider & folk art. His personal art collection will be auctioned in a 539-lot session held on November 11th, the day before the sale of the Cat Project art. Eddington traveled extensively throughout the Four Corners region of the Southwest in search of Native American art. Experiences there led to his writing of The Trading Post Guidebook Editions I & II which list trading posts, galleries, auctions, and museums where art may be purchased. Among the top-estimated Southwestern artworks in the collection are Lot 342, an Emmi Whitehorse (Navajo, N.M., b. 1957-) oil & chalk on paper laid to canvas work signed and titled "Influent" on verso, estimated at $2000-$4000; and Lot 393, a Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo, N.M., b. 1969-) painted clay feline with a bird on its head estimated at $1000-$2000. There are many other noteworthy artworks in the Eddington collection. Lot 119 is a Francis Bacon (British, 1909-1992) artist's proof hand-colored lithograph entitled "D'Apres Three Studies of the Human Body" and is estimated at $3000-$5000. Lot 22 is a polychrome-painted cutout wood sculpture of a Coca-Cola bottle by Reverend Howard Finster (American, 1916-2001). Entitled "Mr. Coke," the 1989 work is signed & dated and estimated at $800-$1200.

Quinn's Auction Galleries - Central Virginia is proud to present many fine paintings, period American & European furniture, Tiffany decorative items, Continental & American silver (including an exquisite 18th century Russian silver gilt & enamel brandy cup), and a diverse collection of Asian ceramics (of particular note is a pair of Qian Long peacock blue lidded baluster vases) . The highlight of this auction is Uncle Jesse, a large oil on canvas by Lucy May Stanton portraying an elderly African-American gentleman in three-quarter view. He gazes at the viewer over his wire-rim glasses in an authentic, nearly unstaged manner. This magnificent portrait is conservatively estimated at $30,000-$50,000. Lucy May Stanton (1875-1931) was an important American Impressionist best-known for her fine miniatures; her later landscapes, still lifes & portraits would beautifully represent her Southern heritage in exquisite detail. Her works may be seen in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the United States House of Representatives, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Georgia Museum of Art. Another featured lot is a Tiffany Studios table lamp in the Colonial pattern. Its striking green lead glass shade rests on a double-scroll bronze base impressed with the familiar Tiffany markings. The estimate on the lamp is $8000-$12,000. Also offered is a Neoclassical demilune table originally owned by the Tayloe family of Mount Airy in the Northern Neck of Virginia. The Tayloes - friends and confidants of George Washington - were colonial statesmen and soldiers whose descendant Phoebe Ogle Tayloe bequeathed her considerable estate to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1882. The Corcoran deaccessioned the table in the 1950s; it was then purchased by its current owner and loaned to Mount Vernon where it was displayed until the late 1970s. This lovely and well-traveled table carries an estimate of $6000-$8000. The next highlighted lot is a watercolor by the noted French Symbolist Odilon Redon. This piece is a study in contrasts: the muted sky is separated from the vivid blue sea by a seemingly stationary sailboat. Its estimate is $4000-$6000. Another highlight is truly a one-of-a-kind item: a large Empire Gothic breakfront secretary used by Governor Rufus Bullock of Georgia. Bullock, the state's first Republican governor, was in office during Reconstruction and promoted political and economic equality for all citizens. Interestingly, he is referenced in Gone with the Wind as an instrument of Northern subjugation of the South. Deeply unpopular with his white constituents, he was forced to resign by the Ku Klux Klan in 1871. This monumental and historic piece of furniture is estimated at $6000-$8000.
